As I am sure many of you can relate to, while we social distance at home, I am trying to occupy the kids with different activities. With a three and a half year age gap, it isn’t always easy to find something they both get into. So when I challenged them to create the alphabet and numbers with building bricks, I didn’t know what to expect.

What followed was pure bliss. My 9 year old son and 6 year old daughter worked in unison, proudly taking turns and helping each other produce individual letters and numbers. Before I knew it, over an hour and a half had passed and they wanted to share their masterpieces.

Since it was such a hit, the teacher in me saw extensions from their creations. As my daughter continues to work on her spelling, I had her start putting letters together to create words. Similarly, the numbers can be represented with blocks shown or by creating addition or subtraction equations.

Along these lines I saw the opportunity to create individual cards for printing. These could be used as a base to guide children to build their own alphabet or number line using bricks. Or they could be used as flash cards to teach during these homebound times.
