If you saw my previous post, you would have seen how I turned a plain-looking den into a lovely little nursery. Since the heart wall hanging I created to spruce up the space was pretty easy to make, I thought I would share my step-by-step instructions in case you’re inspired to update your nursery, kids room, or playroom with a similar piece!
STEP 1: COLLECT THE SUPPLIES
The supplies needed are the following:
- Cutting board
- Craft knife
- Pencil
- Wall hooks
- Hot glue gun
- Heart-shaped cookie cutter
- Yardstick/metre stick
- Cardstock in a variety of colours
- 12 yards of elastic
STEP 2: TRACE AND CUT HEARTS
Gather a piece of the cardstock, a pencil, and the heart-shaped cookie cutter. Trace around the outside of the cookie cutter with a pencil. Continue to make a few different hearts down and across the page. Once that’s done, cut out the hearts and lay them aside. Do this with all the different colours of cardstock. In total, I had 77 hearts cut out. Don’t worry—this is the most tedious step by far!
STEP 3: SLICE HEARTS TOP AND BOTTOM
For every heart, take your craft knife and slice a small 1 cm line at the top and bottom of each. This creates two holes just large enough to allow you to thread the elastic through.
STEP 4: THREAD THE ELASTIC
Cut the elastic into 7 separate strands measuring around 5 feet each. Take each measured strand and thread the elastic through a collection of hearts. As you can see, I put 11 hearts on each strand and used multiple variations of colour combinations.
STEP 5: GLUE STRANDS TO YARDSTICK
Get the yardstick and turn it over to the side that will face the wall (if yours is numbered, that’s this side so they don’t show). One by one, glue each strand of hearts onto the stick, leaving a bit of space between each. Finally, since you eventually will not see this side of the stick, you can even reinforce each strand with tape on top of the glue.
STEP 6: INSTALL HOOKS AND HANG
Since the ruler is now set with the hearts, it’s time to install it in on the wall. I recommend placing two of the 3M Command hooks up close to the ceiling of the room. They need to be placed just inside the measurement of the yardstick. Once installed, you can place the ruler on the two hooks and your project is ready to enjoy!
Keep in mind that you can really do this hanging with any shape and in a variety of colour palettes. I was thinking of how cute this would be with stars or even triangles. Also, if you have access to a sewing machine you could skip the step with the elastic and sew the pieces together, as seen on the original post I found.
Now, time to get crafting!
