Small Space Living – Den Turned Nursery

Living in Vancouver, it’s well known that real estate and space come at a premium. When my daughter was born, my husband and I were living with our 3-year-old son in a two-bedroom apartment downtown with just over 800 square feet. So, unless we wanted our newborn and our toddler to share a room, I had to get creative. Fortunately, our place had a little den that was being used for storage. I moved the contents to a storage locker and—voila! The den-nursery was born!

I managed to find the perfect crib for the space at a local modern kids store. The Bloom Alma Mini Crib is a compact crib that can even be folded up when not in use. It is also on wheels, so when she was first born, we could have her in our room or I would often place her in my main living space while playing with my son.

Other than the crib, my favourite part of the room was the heart wall hanging that brightened up the space. I created it after being inspired by a post I came across on Pinterest. With just a few materials I got at Michaels and the local fabric store, I made this statement piece that turned the den from blah to fab. Utilizing the colours of the wall hanging, I chose a few accessories to match. This is always my favorite part of decorating a space. Seriously, how cute is the handmade doll I found on Etsy?! This doll continues to be a favorite in our house.

I should note: This space was without storage and a diaper change table, which are crucial for any baby’s nursery. However, I had a closet nearby where I placed the change pad and dresser. Being creative with space when living in small quarters is a must!

And, while we have since moved on from this apartment with this cute nursery (we have upgraded to a “spacious” 1300 square foot suite), pictures of this room will always bring a smile to my face and hold a special place in my heart. It was the first room I brought my little daughter home to.
